Housing guinea pigs

There are several internet sources of very good information on suitable housing
for guinea pigs, so here are the links to the websites.

If you keep a few pet guinea pigs only, please consider keeping them indoors which we think you'll find more convenient for you, and which will give you far more opportunities to enjoy your pets.  You won't need an expensive set up if you have indoor pigs, as the link to guineapigcages.com below will show you.  Do be aware, though, that cats and dogs regard guinea pigs as potential food!

Have a look at our page on indoor guinea pigs where we cover this subject in detail.

Finding a good guinea pig vet

We've directed you to this website, which is full of good advice and links to help you find the nearest vet to you able to help your guinea pig.  Not all vets specialise in small rodents - you have been warned!

Feeding guinea pigs

People often ask us what we feed our pigs. Have a look at the poll below, and you'll see a list containing many of the foods we feed routinely every day.

By far the most important food isn't mentioned and that is hay. We bed our pigs on it and they spend a large part of their day munching it, sleeping in it, and tunnelling through it. We buy it by the bale locally, and use about 2 bales every week.

In spring, summer and autumn we also feed grass in vast quantities, and when the winter comes and the weather is bad we feed a horse feed called 'Readigrass' (high quality chopped dried grass) in substitution. We also keep each pig supplied with dry cereal mix – a quality guinea pig + vitamin C muesli, mixed with dry goat mix (a 50:50 ratio).

However we do not like our pigs to be over-reliant on this as it can make them fat. Some breeders suspect that bladder and kidney stones may be caused by overfeeding of dry cereals.
